Gameplay Programmer

Avalanche Studios Group is based in Stockholm, New York, Malmö and Liverpool, and spans over the creative divisions: Avalanche Studios, Expansive Worlds and Systemic Reaction.

Avalanche Studios is the division dedicated to ambitious, externally published, AAA open world games like Just Cause, Mad Max, and Rage 2 - our upcoming title Contraband is a co-op smuggler’s paradise set in the fictional world of 1970s Bayan.

Contraband is a brand new IP published by Xbox Game Studios, and we're now looking for a talented Gameplay Programmer to join our team at the Stockholm or New York office.

The Position

Avalanche Studios Group is now looking for several talented Gameplay Programmers to join a top-tier, experienced team to create fun and engaging game experiences on Contraband.

Work side by side with designers, animators and producers to realize complex and realistic animal behavior. Take part in designing and implementing their senses and needs using and extending existing tools as well as implementing game systems related to pathfinding, decision making, group movement and locomotion. This role will require you to take high level design ideas and translate them into practical solutions. You will join the Avalanche engineers in developing and maintaining our proprietary Apex Engine.

It is expected that you see your responsibility as delivering a successful end-user experience, together with your team-mates, rather than just handing off technological solutions to content creators. Great gameplay relies on being able to harness all of the tools and systems available within a modern game engine.  You possess the curiosity and flexibility to be able to move between AI, physics, animation, camera, UI, SFX, VFX, dialog, etc. Previous experience and proven ability to work with multiple systems and stakeholders is a definite advantage. Finally, as with any other programming role, you will have to be able to balance functional requirements with technical requirements in the areas of performance, stability, memory usage, interoperability.

Required Qualifications

  • A good understanding of what makes games fun
  • A passion for creating fun gameplay
  • Experience with multiple gameplay systems (animation, character control, camera, physics, AI, audio, VFX, etc)
  • Experience with several forms of gameplay, e.g. vehicles, ranged combat, melee combat, exploration, multiplayer / social interaction, traversal gameplay, etc.
  • Able to write readable, robust and performant code in C++
  • Prior experience working as a programmer on at least one shipped title on current-gen consoles from start to finish

Beneficial Qualifications

  • Experience of implementing character mechanics
  • Experience of implementing NPC behaviors using AI
  • Experience of implementing physics-based gameplay elements, e.g. interactive environment elements, force effectors, physics-based puzzles, etc.
  • Experience with character state systems like damage, health, inventory.
  • Experience from working with animation state machines, animation blending, IK and similar techniques
  • Experience of profiling and optimization
